2012: Peter Gersten's "Leap of Faith"

Lawyer Peter Gersten has been a well-known figure in UFOlogy at least since the 1970s. He filed suit against the CIA in U.S. District Court in 1977 for release of documents concerning UFOs. This resulted in over 900 pages of documents being released, although there was little in them that wasn't already known. There were 57 pages that were held back due to "national security" concerns. UFOlogists made a big stink about this, claiming it's proof of a government cover-up. However, the files were held back because they might allow other nations to gain information on U.S. capabilities in electronic and signals intelligence. For example, there was one document where the CIA listened in on a Cuban pilot discussing a UFO sighting. The problem wasn't the UFO sighting, it was that we didn't want the Cubans to know we'd been able to hear their pilots' conversations.

Now retired to Sedona, Arizona, a center of a supposed 'New Age energy vortex',  Gersten says that he plans to take a "leap of faith" from Bell Rock, a well-known vortexy place in Sedona, at the moment of the solstice: 11:11 UT on Dec, 21, 2012. This will be 4:11 AM in Arizona, and according to a reference I checked (http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/seasons.html target=BLANK ), is within 1 minute of the time of the actual solstice.

Gersten writes, "On the Winter Solstice of 2012 at exactly 11:11 UT a cosmic portal will open in Sedona Arizona and a leap of faith - from the top of Bell Rock - will propel me through its opening.... My two principal beliefs are: 1) that our reality is an intelligently designed cosmic holographic program and 2) that on the Winter Solstice of 2012 at exactly 11:11 UT – a Trans-Dimensional Event (T-DE) will occur... an article on my web site discussing the Mayan calendar end-date states that: There is no reason not to take a leap of faith imagining what may be in store (10). So by now you must have an idea of what I plan to do on the Winter Solstice of 2012 at exactly 11:11 while on the top of Bell Rock – a place only a few miles from my home.... Most of you will think that I am delusional and that my insane act will certainly result in my death. Death is inevitable - at least nowadays - and 100 years from now it won't matter whether I died in 2012 or 2013 or even 2020. But I believe that some type of cosmic portal will be opening at that time and place and that an opportunity will present itself. I fully expect that it will either lead to the next level of this cosmic program; freedom from an imprisoning time-loop; a magical Martian-like bubble; or something equally as exotic. In March 2012 I will reach 70 years of age and nine months later we arrive at the cosmic coordinate. I think it will then be time for me to move on - in one form or another. I'd like to see what else our Cosmic Computer has to offer." (http://www.pagenews.info/commentary/wintersolstice2012.php )

When I first read about this, I could not believe that it was true. Perhaps somebody with a grudge against Gersten made this up? Yet in the YouTube video above, we see and hear Gersten telling, in his own words, about his plan to (hopefully) leap into the portal that he believes should be opening up. He explains that, even if he dies in this leap, it is probably good Karma to die at such at the time of such special cosmic energy.

Bell Rock, Sedona, AZ

What Gersten and so many others do not seem to realize is that from an astronomical standpoint, there is nothing special or even a little bit unusual going on in December of 2012. Nada. There will be a Transit of Venus across the Sun on the afternoon of June 5, 2012 (the morning of June 6 in Asia and Australia), which is a really special and rare celestial alignment (the next one won't occur until 2117), but clearly that is not what the hoopla is about. No "alignments" are going to happen around the 2012 winter solstice that do not also happen every other December. Supposed "Bible Codes" and "ancient calendars" simply don't cut it. No matter how many times nonsense is repeated, it still remains nonsense. Echo chambers do not contribute to truth.

I've briefly met Gersten a few times, and he is a pleasant fellow. I hope he is not serious about this, and finds reason to change his mind. If he's in good health at age 70, he can easily live at least another ten or twenty more years. I hope he doesn't give up the rest of his life because of babblings about "ancient calendars" and "trans-dimensional effects."

[For updates on this story, see the posting The Apocalypse Made Easy, November 17, 2012.
Gersten did not jump. He is still alive in 2013. ]

I hope he doesn't go through with it; that's a long way to fall when he's wrong.

  3. Bob: Thanks for the attention. I've updated my beliefs and the reasons for them here: http//www.1111invitation2012.info and I encourage you to do the same. And just to be astronomically correct there is a very significant alignment only occurring on December 21, 2012 - and the most likely reason for the Maya recycling their Long Count calendar on that specific day. You can either do a little research or read Monday's entry in my Countdown Journal.

Kulgur:Have you read my 'nonsense' or are you just basing you opinion on hearsay that justifies your beliefs? But is it worth the fall if I am right? Actually it is a leap of faith and not a 'fall' - just to set the record straight.

    1. I have been searching for the past half hour * like it really matters how long I've searched for* to find a way to get in contact with Peter G.

After reading all of this and listening to you I finally feel like i'm not the only one out there who understand this. I have come to understand and witness this in recent years, and have had no one to confide in, to express everything to and to even just bounce things off of.

Mr. Gersten if you have the time could you please get in contact with me?
      my email is nickstapleton88@gmail.com
I know you only have so long left here, but before you go will you please help show some light onto the "true reality" that I've had a very difficult time coming to grips with

  4. How long is this portal supposed to be open? How critical is his timing? How big is it and will he be able to see it? I wonder if it has ever occurred to him that he could jump into this portal with a hang glider; or wearing a parachute? Why would it matter any more than if he were wearing clothes? If he misses, or if it doesn't open, he can alway try again some other time. Perhaps these questions are answered in the video, but I have been unable to view it.

His best option is to scrap the whole loony idea, and maybe when he's up there looking down he'll do that. But why would he not give himself some kind of "safety net" in the event something were to go wrong? Even if some portal miraculously opens, and he hits the bullseye, where is he going to land in his new world? More rocks?

Actually, if the Rev. Harold Camping is correct (http://badufos.blogspot.com/2010/12/public-notice-beginning-of-judgment-day.html ), then we won't have to worry about 2012, because The Rapture begins in a little over three months, on May 21. Gersten has already filled in the dates of his birth and his death on his website. However, he didn't take into account the the Second Coming and the Rapture might begin this year, and so he might not even make it to 2012.

  25. I know Peter. Not well but know him nonetheless. Who made all of us the judge and jury of what is right and wrong with a person's personal belief system? Each of us have expressed opinions based on OWN experiences and interpretations of our lives and each of those experiences are naturally going to be different from one person to the next. It is literally impossible for two people to see the same thing even if they see the same thing because of the fact that our personal experiences in life give each of us a different perpectives on what it is that we are seeing. Each of us have the right to believe what ever it is we want to believe, without judgement from others. If this is what is going to make Peter happy or fulfilled in his life, then so be it. It's no one's business but his own. He is not crazy, he does not need an intervention from family members nor does he need to be hospitalized. Instead of judging someone else's personal belief system maybe we should be taking a look at our own. What are our belief systems? They may not be the same as our friends or family's belief systems but does that make them wrong or just different? Where did we learn them? Did someone give them to us or did we set out to search for them ourselves? In our society it is difficult NOT to judge others because this is what we are taught to do. If we were to just accept everyone exactly as they were, what a wonderful place this earth might be.

Let's be objective here: if a man you never met in your life claimed that he believes that our reality is a holographic program and that in the winter solstice in dec, 2012 a cosmic portal will open up and he decided to jump from Bell Rock - which is 4816 ft - at 11:11 to enter this portal, you wouldn't find that crazy and this person to be completely delusional?

If I was friend, relative or even an acquaintance of Peter Gersten I would be worried about his state of mind and for his safety (actually I am worried). But if I knew him in person I would do anything to keep him from hurting himself due this crazyness.

This is not about not letting people believe in what they want. It's about being reasonable and realize this all new age baloney will put someone's life in danger.

Did Peter Gersten is so trapped in Lala Land that he didn't realize this taskwork of his will get him killed?

I do, however, think you are on the right track. The intelligent design by a higher being is indeed true. That being, however, has told us how it will end and no where did it mention jumping througj a hole.

  33. Michelle, 10:05 here. I'm glad you responded. I mentioned Dec 12 2012 because of this post. No one can predict when the world will end...but the more research I do I find that science points towards a higher being pulling our known universe together. Most scientists will tell you the same. OR, they refuse to believe that idea and are relentless in finding how we emerged from nothing. The more we discover, the more we realize we will never find the "cause" of what most definitely will be an end.
Big bang, anthropic principles, and entropy all lead to a beginning and end. As an atheist I I didn't want that to be true. However, I see know way around it at this time.

    >> No one can predict when the world will end...
Actually, we can and we already did. Regardless if mankind and all the other species will exist until then or not; our planet is doomed to end for about 4-5 billion years from now when the sun will begin to die. The sun will expand and will swallow the each planet probably until Mars; it's when the hydrogen reservations will end and the sun will start to consume helium. When the big red ball fase ends, the sun will be very unstable and will lose all his external layers. In 100.000 years the Sun will be a small and hot star claeed the white dwarf. When the helium reservation ends the nuclear reactions will stop for good, the sun won't produce any energy and the sun will get colder until it becomes a black dwarf. Even if earth doesn't wind up beign swallowed by the giant red ball it will be a dead planet because it won't have the sun's energy and heat to keep the planet warm.

    >>But the more research I do I find that science points towards a higher being pulling our known universe together.
Which evidence is that? If you do have one, you have to bring to the scientific community to be analyzed many times over and over again for a considerable period of time to see if your evidence it will be proved to be correct or not. If your evidence is proved to be correct then it will have publications recognized by the scientific community. Care to try? lol

    >> The more we discover, the more we realize we will never find the "cause" of what most definitely will be an end.
We can't know what exactly set the Big Bang off (at least yet, maybe we will find out, maybe we won't; who knows right?); all we know about it is that the universe was trapped in a really small place with high temperatures and very unstable energy and that one day expanded at a really high speed which was decreasing with time, the universe began to get colder, the laws which rules the universe originated giving origin to planets, stars, moons, black holes, supernovas, galaxies, etc.

It can't be proved if some intelligent being originated the universe, the same way it can't be proved otherwise. There's no evidence that proves one way or the other. We may not find answers for everything, but at least we don't put some intelligent designer (which is based on faith only) in the equation. What you're doing here is called "god in the gaps" (we don't how something works or why/how happened, therefore god it) and it's also called the Watchmaker Analogy which states that design implies a designer. This analogy has an important role in natural theology and the "argument from design," where it was used to support arguments for the existence of god and for the intelligent design of the universe.

PS: you're not an atheist; you are probably a deist (someone who believes in god outside organized religion which viewpoint is that reason and observation of the natural world can determine that the universe is a creation and has a creator)

How did the authors know that with out even primitive technology. It's very intriguing. The "god in the gaps" theory is very easy to agree with isn't it?
However, the more we discover those gaps begin to close....or, as you might say, the gaps get bigger.

The bible also says in a lot of passages earth is flat with four corners (a square?!?!); it's sustained by pillars; it doesn't move (unless god gets angry to the point of making the pillars shake) and the sun moves around earth; we both know that's not true, right?

It's easy to agree with "god in the gaps", but I don't. It's an argument based only on faith/wishful thinking and there's no verifiable, tangible, rock solid evidences to back this up. Not meant to be offensive here (but if I do, I'm sorry in advance) but "god in the gaps argument" is intellectual laziness.

One theory is just as crazy as the next. That's why i posed the question of whether or not mr gersten had evidence of us living in a holographic world. Maybe he had research I was unaware of. No, doubt however that the design of our universe has many consistensies that coincide with a higher creator. BTW.... I haven't used the "bible" word. Lol!

You didn't use the world "bible" but this sentence "The elements will melt with a fervent heat" is in the bible (2 Peter 3:10).

The thing is creationism is based on the bible and ID is based on religious beliefs. ID is a way creationists found to make creationism look more scientific in order to gain more followers/believers to their biblical cosmogony and to teach it in public schools. Of course not everyone falls for that crap.

    >> That's why i posed the question of whether or not mr gersten had evidence of us living in a holographic world. Maybe he had research I was unaware of.

Gerstein's beliefs is based on ancient calendars and new age bullshit. We don't live in a holografic world and it's batshit insane to think/believe we do. And it's more batshit insane to jump from Bell Rock believing a energy vortex to another dimension or something like that will open up, taking the risk of getting killed in the process.

To me it's lazyness indeed. Some people think this way as I told you before: "I don't know why/how this happened, so god did it" and that "explanation" is good for them; they don't allow themselves to think any further.

  43. Yep. That's sad that people think that way. That gives forward and logical thinking Christians a bad name. I am as open minded as anyone and am always looking for answers through science. " I don't know". As lazy and uneducated as I sound to you, the fact that someone believes we are here to today because of chance and originally from nothing, sounds just as nuts to me. Until science disproves a higher being ill continue to believe in God.....and the great thing is......my faith has no bearing on you or anyone else....I pose no danger to you.......now I can't speak for the other idiots who make claims to be Christian yet allow their actions to show otherwise.

    >> Yep. That's sad that people think that way. That gives forward and logical thinking Christians a bad name.

This way of thinking gives a bad name for people from other religious beliefs also. Intelectual lazyness and christianity are not mutually exclusive.

But there's nothing wrong at admitting "I don't know" and it's not being intellectually lazy saying we don't know everything. It's quite the opposite; by saying "I don't know" allows us to keep searching for answers. This search is important and enlightening; even though we may not find the answers we are looking for we wind up learning new things and finding other answers for other questions. What gives anyone (no matter what their religious beliefs/ideologies are) a bad name is the certainty some of them have about knowing everything when they know nothing; a good/perfect example for that is Bill O' Reilly (I've never seen someone so intellectually lazy/dishonest as him).

    >> As lazy and uneducated as I sound to you, the fact that someone believes we are here to today because of chance and originally from nothing, sounds just as nuts to me. Until science disproves a higher being ill continue to believe in God.....and the great thing is......my faith has no bearing on you or anyone else....I pose no danger to you.......

Science can't prove there isn't a higher being the same it can't prove there is. The existence of a higher being who created everything is left to human imagination/wishful thinking only.

    >> Now I can't speak for the other idiots who make claims to be Christian yet allow their actions to show otherwise.
I know some christians and some people from other religions who are a bunch of hypocrites.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Unfortunately, hypocrites are very prevalent. These are people who are "Luke warm". They are a negative to you and me and may in fact be dangerous to us both. Hypocrites sit next to you everyday and spew "faith based" messages while living completely different lives. However, the core of yhose who live christian lives, want nothing more for all to live long healthy lives and when science discovers something new they are in awe just like you and I. It's also unfortunate for Christians to be lumped in with other pantheism, scientology, Muslim, or any other group that don't subscribe to peace, or "the golden rule" or any other doctrine that doesn't treat other humans as they would want to be treated.

Maybe Peter Gersten is on to something being that he has had all these dealings with the government about UFO secrets and coverups they made him an offer he couldn't refuse and are going to help him in some way to keep him quiet and off there backs cause maybe he hit a nerve if you know what I mean and they are going to help him disappear perhaps in a manner of speaking as a reward for his silence you never know we'll have to wait till that special date to find out or maybe we won't ...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Personally, I think this idea is crazy. I do not rule out the possibility of something happening on 12.21.12 and if it does, I'm going to accept my fate. Until then, I am enjoying my life to the fullest as if then is the end. If it's not, then we can all move on and continue living life to the fullest. Hell, look at the number of lives lost over the years from natural disasters already, plus random shootings, terrorist attacks, accidents, etc... ANYTHING can happen, anywhere, any time. You should live like today is your last... Interested to see what happens with Mr. Gersten, but broadcasting his 'suicide' to the world isn't the best idea. Officials will put a stop to this before it happens. Living in AZ, I will be there to witness first hand no matter what.

Hope no one falls for his financial scheme to get rich!! Don't waste your money people!! Donate what you would to this suicidal person to a homeless shelter near you for people that actually want to live but are having a hard time!!

  52. Anon-12-19,

Every emergency services organization (police, fire, etc.) deals with bridge jumpers and other would-be suicides on a regular basis. Given this much advance notice, you can be sure that they will do something to intervene.

"In Arizona, the government can mandate in-patient treatment for anyone determined to be "persistently or acutely disabled." Virtually anyone who suspects that someone has mental problems and needs help could file an application to a state-licensed healthcare agency for a court-ordered evaluation." (Wikipedia, "Involuntary commitment.") In California, it's called a "5150" - a 72-hour hold for mental health evaluation.

  53. WOW hey buddy, you better not brainwash and drag anyone else to dive off a rock and splat all over the beautiful arizona desert, Those other people have families and children, you definately need some serious medication,

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with a previous poster that we should have some respect for his beliefs. Human beings should certainly be able to exercise power over their own lives. If he decides it's his destiny to jump off this rock, risking his life, good for him. Everyone employs some sort of construct to give their lives meaning. His just happens to involve throwing himself off a rock. The knee jerk reaction of "institutionalize him!" is much more harmful than his own New Age beliefs. What gives anyone the right to limit another's freedom, isolating them from society and locking them in a building where are they are forcibly drugged? Such an approach is incredibly abusive, dehumanizing, and blatantly undermines perceptual freedom and human creativity. Only in a society that fears and loathes other perceptual possibilities could we have the Baker Act. It should be well within an individual's right to cause harm to himself. Consumption of unhealthy food is entirely legal, while the leading causes of death in the US are heart disease and cancer, which are caused or exacerbated by unhealthy diet.

Also, I think it's arrogant to say he worthy of a Darwin Award, especially as he already an elderly man-- he has already passed his genes on.

It's also arrogant to say his beliefs are silly simply because they aren't mainstream. As someone else said, his ideas are no sillier than Christian mythology, but no one is labeled crazy for celebrating Christmas. Just because an idea is supported by the majority doesn't make it more truthful. To each his own, I insist.

  58. A batshit crazy UFO lawyer is going to jump off a big red rock to his death because he believes a magic universal portal will open and he will be transported to a new dimension. 11:11 is just a number. You get to see it 2 times a day every day. Of course there will be times where it coincidentally coincides with an event at that given time. But that is all it is. When this guy jumps and dies, will there be a reserve jumper ready at 12:12? I feel bad for this guy's family and ancestors, he does all their sacrifices and accomplishments a huge dishonor by doing something so unbelievably stupid. Generations of of this guys family endured life before him just so he can foolishly throw his away. I think he owes them more then that even if he doesn't agree, to live his life as long as possible and let the cards fall wear they may. Forcing death/suicide is selfish as all hell. I had a very good friend take his life and it destroyed his family. This guy is selfish and pardon the pun but he needs a BIG "reality" check.

I am afraid for the people that will follow him and start jumping. If everyone would have jumped at Y2K they would have missed 11 years of life. Asking for money in a time when people are afraid of their future is greedy. I have been seeing all of the stories about the end coming in Dec. and how the planets are going to line up. If it truely is the end of the earth then it is meant to be. A man jumping off a cliff is not going to change the line up of planets nor am I putting my faith in him to save me. Don't jump on my account.

  64. His beliefs are no more ludicrous than many belief systems we hear about on a daily basis, but that's exactly it. We hear about many Religions and their beliefs every day, and so we've grown desensitized to the sheer madness of it all. Is believing we're in a Matrix spin-off really crazier than denying the legitimacy of Carbon-dating? Or believing that 6,000 species of reptiles, 9,000 birds, 1,000 amphibians, and 15,000 species of mammals plus one-million species of insects( Another million estimated to be discovered) fit on a single ship while the entire earth was flooded without their natural food sources to keep them alive?

I mean, think people. This kind of stuff has been going on forever. Religion, I mean. I'm sure someone is going to point out the fact that what Mr. Gersten believes isn't necessarily a religion, but that's really irrelevant. My point is actually this, though I do not believe as he believes, I believe that Mr. Gersten has as much right to believe what he does as any believer in any religion.

That's not to say that I condone this sort of human wastefulness. I honestly wish we could 'get past' religion, as it only slows down the progress of the race as a whole...

  74. I spent this weekend hiking with Peter and would like to clear up a few misconceptions people seem to have.

First, Peter has never said anything about jumping OFF of Bell Rock. He has stated "A Leap of Faith" will propel him through an inter-dimensional portal. His belief in a portal on Bell Rock differs from thousands of other pilgrims only in his timing. Every day there are people visiting Bell Rock to experience the unique energy found there. Many leave disappointed while others swear to extra-dimensional experiences, including teleportation and visitations with angels or other "beings of light". There are not enough institutions to hold all of those who have claimed to have a "religious experience" in my 30+ years living near Bell Rock.

Secondly, he has NEVER asked for donations for his Bell Rock adventure. The only donations he ever asked for were to fund Freedom of Information requests by CAUS (Citizens Against UFO Secrecy). He is not a "UFO nut", He was a Public Defender in Navajo County, AZ until his recent retirement and still assists them 2 days a week. There are plenty of "officials" who will vouch for his sanity along with close friends and family who know he is not suicidal.

A "Leap of Faith" should not be construed a jump to his death.

Jesus died milleniuns ago, god probably doesn't exist...so as hell and heaven.

If he jumps from that cliff, he will fall, hit the ground and die. That's all. It will be a terrible way to die and I sincerely hope he gives up that nonsense. Not because he's going to hell or any imaginary bad place or to guarantee a place in heaven or any other imaginary good place, but because to keep on living for the sake of his family and his own.

  75. @ 1:10 "I don't think you go... uh... get out of the solar system, travel out of the solar system in any physical object". This is contradicted by the Pioneer probes which both have exited the solar system.

@ 2:40 he says "... the third possibility, besides me crashing to my death ..." contradicts what "Bell Rock 2012" has said. If he's not jumping off of Bell Rock, why would he 'crash to his death'?

Oh, and by the way, the moment of the winter solstice is at 11:11:37.4. If his 'leap' occurs at 11:11 UT then he'd be 37 seconds early. If he falls 100 feet, he's got about 2.5 seconds. If he falls 250 feet, he's got about 4 seconds.

"I don't think it's going to involve risking my life," he said. "The Leap of Faith was bringing 120 people to the top of Bell Rock without knowing why." He said he felt like he needed to bring at least 111 people to the top of Bell Rock over the last several months to prepare for today."
